This is a drawing I had to do for my drawing class. I had to find a gesture drawing done by a famous artist from the good "old" days and redraw it myself. So I took the drawing. "Lion Resting, Turned to the Left" drawn by Rembrandt van Rijn. In the original piece done by Rembrandt, he used basically ink and bistre. On my remake, I used charcoal, graphite, sharpie, and ball point. I think it was a good attempt but, it didn't turn out quite like I wanted it too, but I think it'll still get me a good grade. Well I hope you all enjoy it, it's not often I do traditonal art. Please leave your comments and critiques so I can see what everyone else thinks. Thanks.
Original Artwork (c) Rembrandt van Rijn 1650-52 Remake (c) 2008
I would say more gesture with the charcoal before sealing it with the inks. Also, the relations for your rendition are off with the eyes and the body posture compared with the original. Another suggestion is to step back from your drawing, and really see if you're on the right track or not. Not just with this assignment, but the rest of your life in drawing. Take a step back after a few good minutes, really see what needs to be fixed.
The shading shows shape, which is good. What would be good is to see if you could follow the artist's shading exactly, to see what that artist was thinking. Then you would be able to take what you learn from the artist, and put your own spin on it....
And who knows...maybe as a personal project, you can do it over again, and see if you can push the picture further..and see if you really follow the artist line for line.

Thanks bro, that was a difficult pic, it has so many different things going on at one time in that pic. But thanks for the insight, I'll have to try stepping back method to evaluate it as I draw. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

Thanks man, I spent like 3 hours drawing that damn lion...lol. I think it looks good, but that really not I wanted it to turn out. Oh well, long as I get a grade...anything's better than a "0"

it has so many different things going on at one time in that pic. That's where you can at least focus on one area at a time, and continue to evaluate the process...not to mention goin' at a fast pace too. Gettin' the marks and strokes down, and whatnot. You're welcome, and continue to draw man.

This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and *Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same.
